Visions of the Environmental Movement + Not a Drop to Drink

Program #BROD001-BARM003.

 First Program: David Brower – Visions of the Environmental Movement

The myriad of environmental crises is well known. Unless a comprehensive healing process is undertaken immediately to restore much of the damage done to the earth, future generations may not have much of a livable planet left. There is still time to arrest the dangerous trends, but it will require new thinking, innovative approaches and a concerted global effort.

Second Program: Maude Barlow - Not a Drop to Drink

Many know Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner and its famous "Water, water, everywhere, Nor any drop to drink." Perhaps less known is Mark Twain's, "Whiskey's for drinking, water's for fighting." Today, the UN warns, "Too often, where we need water, we find guns. As the global economy grows, so will its thirst. Many more conflicts lie over the horizon." Once empires were fueled by spices, the fur trade, silver, gold, and ivory, and in recent decades it's been all about oil. Now, water is seen by corporations as the next big thing. This precious resource is being rapidly commodified. Instead of being humankind's common heritage and right it's becoming the private property of giant multinational conglomerates. There are no two ways about it. As Auden wrote, "Thousands have lived without love-not one without water."

Speaker(s):

David Brower

David Brower was perhaps the most famous environmentalist of the 20th century United States. His numerous achievements, over many decades, in defense of the environment are virtually unmatched. He was founder and chair of Earth Island Institute. He served as the Sierra Club's first executive director and later went on to establish Friends of the Earth and the League for Conservation Voters. He received the UN's Lifetime Achievement Award and was twice nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. He died in 2000.
