At Riverside Church

Program #CHON199. Recorded in New York, NY on June 12, 2009.

Chomsky addresses a capacity audience at New York's historic Riverside Church. In his usual style, he covers a wide range of topics such as the escalating wars in Afghanistan and Pakistan, food shortages, the global economic crisis, and the fast looming threat of climate change. He concludes with an ominous warning: "Of all the crises that afflict us, the growing democratic deficit may be the most severe. Unless it's reversed, Arundhati Roy's forecast might prove accurate, and not in the distant future. The conversion of democracy to a performance in which the public are only spectators might well lead inexorably to what she calls the "endgame for the human race."

Speaker(s):

Noam Chomsky

Noam Chomsky, by any measure, has led a most extraordinary life. In one index he is ranked as the eighth most cited person in history, right up there with Aristotle, Shakespeare, Marx, Plato and Freud. The legendary MIT professor practically invented modern linguistics. In addition to his pioneering work in that field he has been a leading voice for peace and social justice for many decades. Chris Hedges says he is “America’s greatest intellectual” who “makes the powerful, as well as their liberal apologists, deeply uncomfortable.” At 87, he still gives lectures all over the world. He is the author of scores of books, including Propaganda & the Public Mind, How the World Works, and Power Systems with David Barsamian.
