Mumia Abu-Jamal (Moo-mee-a Aboo Jamaal) is the most well known death row inmate. In 1982 he was sentenced to death for the murder of a Philadelphia policeman. Numerous efforts, based on new and suppressed evidence, to secure Abu-Jamal a new trial have thus far failed. His case has sparked demonstrations and the formation of support groups throughout the world.

Mumia Abu-Jamal
Mumia Abu-Jamal is an award-winning journalist and radio reporter. He was President of the Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists. In 1982 he was sentenced to death for the murder of a Philadelphia police officer. On-going attempts, based on new and suppressed evidence, to secure him a new trial have thus far failed. His case has sparked demonstrations and the formation of support groups throughout the world. His prison writings have been published in The Nation and the Yale Law Review. His radio commentaries were to have been broadcast by National Public Radio but were abruptly canceled. His book Live from Death Row is published by Addison-Wesley. His attorney, Leonard Weinglass, has also written about the case in Race for Justice, published by Common Courage Press. Mumia Abu-Jamal's latest book is Death Blossoms, published by Plough Publishing House.
