American Jews & Israel
The American Jewish community’s relationship to Israel can perhaps be characterized by devotion and great pride in Israel’s impressive accomplishments. But there is also some ambivalence. In late November, NPR reported that current Israeli policies were generating growing anger among American Jews. In particular, U.S. Jews are vexed by an Orthodox resurgence in Israel seeking to define who is a Jew on its terms. November 12, 1997.

Ira Chernus
Ira Chernus is deeply interested in issues facing American Jews and Israel. He is professor of religious studies at the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he teaches the history of Judaism. He received his Ph.D. in the history of religions from Temple University. He has written a book on the connections between Rabbinic Judaism and Jewish mysticism.
