Literature From the World of Islam
As a result of wars and conflicts, we need a deeper understanding and appreciation of other peoples and their civilizations, especially their artistic, moral and spiritual achievements. Nowhere is this more true perhaps than in the world of Islam, a geographical expanse from Morocco to Indonesia. It is far more than belly dancers, caravans, flying carpets, oil-rich sheikhs, refugee camps and vast empty deserts. Muslim societies represent more than a millennium of vital and creative development. This program presents just a sampling of the rich tapestry and mosaic that is the cultural and spiritual heritage of the world’s more than one billion Muslims. The program begins with Professor Fred Denny’s sonorous reciting of al-Fatiha, the opening surah of the Holy Quran.
Produced and hosted by David Barsamian as part of his Ganges to the Nile series with the participation of Fred Denny, Jennifer Heath and Caroline Hinkley.
Recorded at KGNU.
