The Future of Progressive Politics
Opinion polls and surveys indicate broad discontent with the two existing political parties. Voter participation continues to nosedive. The 1996 election had the lowest turnout since 1924. Is there an opening for a new progressive-based politics? Todd Gitlin thinks so.

Todd Gitlin was a prominent political and social critic. He was a president of SDS, Students for a Democratic Society in the early 1960s. He taught journalism and sociology at NYU and Columbia. Among his many books are The Sixties: Years of Hope, Days of Rage, Inside Prime Time, Twilight of Common Dreams and Occupy Nation: The Roots, the Spirit and the Promise of Occupy Wall Street. He died in 2022.
